De-Duplication and VMware Data Recovery

One of the main issues that you will find with virtual machine based servers is figuring out how to back them up without adding more physical machines. This is now possible with the newer data backup and recovery solutions offered for virtual machines. These new backup and recovery systems have some other advantages, too. One of these advantages is the de-duplication of data.

One VMware data recovery system actually de-duplicates data at the source before it is sent off to the storage facility. Because data is backed up block by block, the system is able to catch all the data that is already in storage and to eliminate duplication before the information is even transported to the place where it will be stored. Unlike other types of backup systems, this system is efficient in that it is constantly de-duplicating data as it backs it up instead of just reducing duplications once in a while.

Over time, this de-duplication process can save twenty-five times as much storage space. A reduction in storage requirements for your backup data obviously means that your whole system is going to run more smoothly. Since the VBAs de-duplicate data as they are backing it up, the backup process takes less time.

This whole de-duplication process actually saves time when it comes to data recovery, too. Since, for one thing, there is less strain on storage capacities, the whole system can run more quickly and efficiently. Plus, the data recovery system doesn’t have to sort through a lot of duplicate data in order to figure out which files need to be restored. You can quickly and easily execute a file-level restoration of just a few files, but you can also do a system-wide restoration in much less time than you would need to do the same thing with a traditional backup method that would have lots of extra files stored.
